David, if you read this you can reply directly to posters who have left thier address by clicking in the small envelope under the persons name, if there is no envelope then they did not leave an address.

I'm trying to reply to a query on page 2 but goodness knows if this is the correct place to do it.
Cumberland FLOOKS. This is almost certain to be yet another regional variation on shock or shook (Scots. Lalland for 12 sheaves together of corn or barley) (before ricking); similarly English shock of corn or wheat was, rarely, of 10 sheaves, and the Essex corn shuck was formed of 20 shooves.
I also wonder if the old f-like 'long s' could have given rise to a misprint (fhook = flook)?
Regards, David

A long shot but my great great grandparents were Thomas WILLIAMSON and Fanny SARGISON.
They were married at CARTMEL FELL CHAPEL in 1852. Have been trying to chase up Williamsons and Sargisons from the Cumbria area.
If any of this fits in with your family history I would like to hear from you.
Regards
Peter Whitehead

I wonder if anyone can cite sources for the myth that there was a certain goddess of the River Caldew called Coventina?

I am at Newcastle studying Ancient History and Archaeology and looking to do my dissertation on the importance of the Cumberland coastal frontiers. If anyone has any pointers / books / directions I could take it would be greatly appreciated/

Just found my ggggrandparents in the 1841 Census for Caldergate, Carlisle St. Mary. The name is DOWELL. They came to the US later that year. Are there church records available for that area & that time?

Hello, I'm interested in finding out about the history of gilpins who emigrated to Ireland... And are there still some relations of these gilpins who reside in Cumberland and Westmorland.

I am carrying out research into Calgarth housing
estate built in 1942 for the workers at the Shorts
Sunderland flying boat factory at Troutbeck,
Windermere. I would like to talk to as many
people as I can who lived on the estate during
its 25 year existence. Please could you contact
me if you can help. Thank you.
